Mr. Burns, a post-electric play

by Anne Washburn
score by Michael Friedman
lyrics by Anne Washburn
directed by Jaime Robledo

LOS ANGELES PREMIERE! After the collapse of civilization, a group of survivors keep the spark of human spirit alive by telling stories around a campfire. As the years wear on, these stories expand into the realm of legend and myth. At turns sidesplitting and bone-chilling, Mr. Burns also features an unusual approach for the Fools: each act will be staged in a different theater space in the Broadwater complex, transporting the audience as we search for the light. Performing in the Broadwater Black Box, Second Stage, and Mainstage.

OCTOBER 13 - NOVEMBER 18, 2017
Fridays & Saturdays @ 8pm
Sundays @ 7pm

Dear Family:

I had a BLAST hosting the annual millennial breakfast at this year's National Council of La Raza annual conference (now Unidos US). Click here or on the pic above to watch the fun dance routine that Olympic gold-medalist Laurie Hernandez and I came up with to surprise the audience!

Below are some upcoming shows in NYC and LA as well as my submission for the #HamiltonChallenge! Thanks to my comedy partner Joshua Silverstein! (Speaking of which, more details to come, but please put August 30th in your calendar. Joshua and I will be performing at the Comedy Central Stage in Hollywood!)

So...I hope you're doing well. I'm tired right now. It's 11pm and I'd love to just binge-watch some Game Of Thrones (I'm on episode 3 of season 1, I have some catching up to do!) but I've gotta send this out and prep for my NYC show this weekend! The work never ends, does it? Hang in there. xo

Love,

Joe

"Riley" The Staged Readings - Live in NYC this Sunday at 1pm or 6pm! I love this web series. Not only do I have a fun character (the cheesy boss Gavin) but it's an award-winning series that's almost all-female led, both in front of and behind the camera. Click here for more details and how to buy tickets! Thanks to lead actress/producer Jennifer Cetrone for getting me involved!
Monday, August 7th at 8pm, I will be performing at Rant & Rave, a long-running storytelling series. This is ALWAYS a great event. Thanks to performer/guest curator Orlando Bishop for getting me involved!

Joshua Silverstein and I won the Encore Producers Award for the second year in the row! That means that we have TWO MORE SHOWS this week:

Thursday, 6/29 at 9:30pm
Friday, 6/30 at 10pm

Take a look at our reviews page. The response has been ridiculous. Here's just a sample:

"In case you didn't realize it, this year at Fringe, you have the opportunity to watch a polished but still spontaneous live HBO comedy special disguised as a late-night 2 man show."

"These two performers are the real deal. Not sure if you're the type to close your eyes in a fringe show but with this one you won't. They are surprising, hilarious, and SMART and I am definitely a fan of these fellas."

Buy your tickets NOW! We will sell out. Not cuz we're popular or anything, it's just a really small theater space. :-)

An avant-garde musical about sex or a comedy show??

*|MC:SUBJECT|*
Some fun shows happening NOW!
View this email in your browser

Dear Family:

Are you into avant-garde musicals about sexual intimacy or comedy shows about men struggling with emotional intimacy? OR BOTH??

I'm currently working on a musical called "Hello Again" by Michael John LaChiusa with an amazingly talented cast over at Chromolume Theatre in Culver City. It's definitely been a fun and challenging role. I get to play a bisexual writer in both the 1970s and 1920s. We close this weekend. Get at me for discount tickets!

And next week, on June 2nd, Joe & Joshua return with a brand new show! Only five performances! Come watch Joshua Silverstein and me wrestle with love and relationships. Developed & directed by Rebecca Larsen. There will be vulgar use of the "F word" and, by "F word," we mean "Friendship."

Buy your tickets NOW cuz we will sell out! Not cuz we're popular or anything, it's just a really small theater space. :-)

And here's my new college show demo reel!

I'm always looking to perform at new schools!
Thanks for reading.

Love,

Joe

I performed for Justice Sonia Sotomayor...NBD.

*|MC:SUBJECT|*
Some fun shows happening SOON!
View this email in your browser

Dear Family:

First of all, I'm totally channeling my mother in this picture. My facial expression, the way I'm holding her hands. Totally my mom. That said...

This woman, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, is one of the coolest people ever! She's so friendly and present and down to earth! And a Princeton Latina! Que viva!

I got to perform for her at the Princeton Latino Alumni Conference held last month. In the photo, I'm sharing with her greetings from Professor
Nancy Malkiel, a mentor of hers, who was also my thesis advisor. I found out that Sonia struggled early on at Princeton (as I did) and she went to Professor Malkiel for assistance (as I did). A pretty cool connection. :-)

On stage, I told the Justice that I had seen her graduation photo on a wall of famous Princeton graduates earlier that day and I had to tell her...she is easily the sexiest Princeton graduate ever! She got such a kick out of the comment, smiling and laughing!

I also had fun with Ted Cruz's twitter account. Cruz is a Latino Princeton graduate who was supposed to attend the conference but canceled at the last minute. So I tweeted him a photo of all of us from stage. HA! (I can't believe I tweeted Ted Cruz.)

But that was LAST month! Here's what's happening RIGHT NOW...
For the month of May, I am singing in a musical!

Hello Again by Michael John LaChiusa is based on the 1897 play La Ronde by Arthur Schnitzler (also titled Reigen). It focuses on a series of love affairs among ten characters during the ten different decades of the 20th century. The musical premiered Off-Broadway in 1993, directed and choreographed by Graciela Daniele.

You can snag 50% off tickets only until Sunday! Code "hello50." Click on the pic to purchase tickets!

For the month of June, my comedy partner Joshua Silverstein and I will be premiering a NEW SHOW at the Hollywood Fringe Fest! Tickets go on sale May 1st! We really like the material that we've been writing and we can't wait to do an intimate late-night show for YOU! Click on the pic for dates and more info!
And here's my new college show demo reel!

I'm always looking to perform at new schools!
Thanks for reading.

Love,

Joe

Let the binge-watching begin!!

Dear Family:

HAPPY THANKSGIVING WEEKEND!

Back in March, I auditioned for a role on the Netflix series "Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life." A few days later, I was shooting and, well, eight months later, it is finally here!! I know that numerous people are binge-watching as I type this! I had a wonderful time playing with Tony award-winning actors Sutton Foster and Christian Borle! So much fun, in fact, that I took a bunch of behind-the-scenes pics that you can view by clicking
HERE or by clicking on the above pic!

I was so inspired by these singers that, if you're in LA, I have a
singing recital next Thursday, Dec 1st! Come out and hear me SING!

And below are a few links to some comedy shorts along with a great interview series that Princeton conducted with alumni.

I hope that you're doing well, staying positive and continuing to move in that direction!

Love,

Joe

What critics have said about previous solo shows:

“The actor-writer Joe Hernández-Kolski pivots on the hyphen in his name, and on other internal divisions, as exuberantly as a break-dancer.”
-The New York Times

"Hernandez-Kolski's performance is perfectly timed and delivered with a ferocity that careens from satirical to indignant."
-LA Weekly
